The 7-Year Rule on Gifting & IHT Exemptions

Gifts made more than 7 years before your death are usually exempt from IHT. If you die within 7 years, tax may apply on a sliding scale (taper relief).

Other common exemptions:
Up to £3,000 per year in gifts (annual exemption)
£250 small gifts to as many people as you like
Wedding gifts: £5,000 (child), £2,500 (grandchild), £1,000 (others)
Regular gifts from income that don’t affect your standard of living

Risks to Consider When Gifting

Gifting isn’t always straightforward. Consider:

Loss of Control

You can’t reclaim
gifts later

Timing

Gifts must be made early to fall outside your estate

Capital Gains Tax

May apply on certain asset transfers

Care Fees

Gifts could be challenged if made to avoid care costs
That’s why you should always speak to a financial conduct authority registered financial adviser before making significant gifts.
